Earth Day 2014 – Berry FUN!

This day was made for me!

Not really, but I think about Earth Day for at least a month before it arrives! Thinking of all of the extra special things that I could do for Mother Earth! I always have a long running list of new things that I plan to implement into my experience so for Earth Day this year, I just picked from what was closest to the surface of my day!

A week ago a good friend and I took a class called Raspberry Fields Forever, through the Driftless Folk School and I returned home with two buckets full of my very own raspberry canes and one HUGE smile! I knew that I would not get time to put them in their new “permanent” home right away so I lightly planted them in Gavin’s garden until I returned home from a trip to Missouri.

We returned home Monday evening the 21st of April and the Universe gave me a beautiful sunny day for Earth Day so that just seemed to be the perfect thing to do this year in honor of Mother Earth!

The whole family joined in, and I mean the WHOLE family, including our 30+ hens!

Dan and Gavin worked on shoveling out sod and the chickens cleaned up all of the worms ASAP! As they dug, I began to plant the canes. Draven went to the garden and hauled buckets of extra soil over to the new patch.

It took us about two hours to complete the whole project from beginning to end.

Raspberries are my very favorite fruit/berry and Draven and Gavin love them as well! Draven loves to put a berry on the end of each finger and pretend they are finger hats before he gobbles them up! We had a great time digging in the dirt and spending time together on a beautiful evening outdoors.

Whenever I establish something new it always seems like its so far off to see the “fruits of my labor” but I often think back to times I wish I had started something and didn’t and realize how quickly the time passes by! Before we know it, we will be loving the delicious new berries that we planted and talking about the time we started our new patch together! We are so very blessed to live in an area with such deep rich soil. I can grow just about anything my heart desires. My family can truly be sustained by Mother Earth! What a beautiful blessed Earth Day 2014!
