Add Some Play To Your Day

I have been writing a whole lot of recipes lately and that’s just fine. I always have lots of requests for them but I have never intended my blogging to be recipes only. I have always had the vision of letting others look into our daily life on any given day. Candid, uncut, real. Craziness and all. So, that’s just what this is about. Today.

Today, is a Sunday, October 12th 2014. Sundays are generally a day at home where we catch up on things that need done, and also a day of looking ahead and prepping for a successful week. And we try to work at a leisurely pace on Sundays because, well…..its Sunday.

Gavin and I have been plucking away at digging his potatoes. Usually digging about 10 gallons at a time, whenever we can fit it in. Potatoes are the largest crop that we plant. Hundreds of plants. We begin digging them around the end of June for fresh baby potatoes to take to the farmers market and continue digging weekly into the fall until the harvest is complete.

Usually by this time of the year Gavin is ready to be done with garden work. And I’m honestly feeling pretty close to the same way. Its a lot to keep up with once school starts again, sports, games, and losing daylight so rapidly. We needed to work on harvesting potatoes today and I knew Gavin was not excited about it. For as long as I can remember, I have always had a mind for being able to make things fun. Even tasks that are just…not… fun.

So, once Gavin started to grumble a bit I just said, “Come on Gav! Let’s get this done, but let’s take Tommy down to the garden with us to let him get all the worms and bugs as we dig” Honestly, digging huge amounts of potatoes is really not that fun to me either so I was looking for a fun twist with our work today too. Gavin immediately perked up and off we went.

Out the door to grab the buckets, potato fork and our favorite little rooster! When we got down to the lower garden with Tommy, he was not quite sure what was going on. Its far enough away from the house that it was all new territory to him. It didnt take long for him to get interested in what was going on. As I began turning over the soil, the potatoes and worms started surfacing.

At first Tommy hung around the pepper plants, nabbing any bugs he found but he soon discovered the abundance of worms where we were working. We laughed and giggled at him diving for worms, bugs and grasshoppers. He clucked quiet little clucks of happiness and contentment. I’m sure he was thanking us for bringing him along.

Before we knew it, our buckets were filled with potatoes and we had fun doing it! We yelped in shock as we felt Tommy’s craw. It was so full of worms and bugs but it was squishy, hense the texture of the worms. We brought him back up to the house and brought back a bunch of worms for the other chickens too.

The daily tasks in our lives are not always fun, pleasant or something we look forward to doing, but we each have a choice in how decide to go about things. There is ALWAYS a way to bring a little it of fun into your day. You just have to look for it! From the day we arrive on Planet Earth our days our numbered and I have always had a desire to play.

That is one of my main goals in this lifetime. To have fun and play no matter where I am at, who I am with or what I am doing.  I have hopes that my boys maintain their playful spirits for a lifetime!

Add some PLAY in your day!
