Think Earth Day!

Do you do anything for Earth Day? If not, it’s never too late to start a new tradition. This could be an article that turns into a book for me but I will try to reign myself in.

recyclelogoglobeOur existence upon this planet is totally dependent upon Mother Earth. All of our truly nourishing foods come from her. Our water, our shelter, clothing – all the things that are essential for our survival come from her in one way or another.

My intention for writing this is to just get some creative juices flowing for readers. As Earth Day approaches the possibilities are endless as to what one could do to make a difference. We have already been discussing what we want to do for Earth Day at our house. Stay tuned, that will be an upcoming article.

Some things we have done in the past at our house for Earth Day have been planting trees, bushes, fine tuning our recycling system, riding our bikes to work and many more. We actually do a lot of these things on a regular basis. If you aren’t one to give much thought to these sort of things, at least let Earth Day be a day where you choose to do something to make a difference!

I will just list out a some ideas.

  • Walk or ride your bike to work or to run errands
  • Plant a tree
  • Plant a garden
  • Set up a car pool schedule
  • Recycle
  • Teach your children about Earth Day and why it is important
  • Turn off lights, turn down heat or A/C
  • Watch an Eco-flick. There are a lot of great documentaries available.
  • Set forth a plan in writing on some long term eco friendly changes you would like to make and start them that day!
  • Go paperless
  • Turn your water heater down
  • Make a waste free lunch
  • Start composting
  • Make your own green cleaning products
  • Volunteer
  • If thinking of getting a pet, adopt from a local shelter
  • Go out and explore nature
  • Buy organic
  • Buy in bulk
  • Hang out your laundry
  • Buy less stuff
  • Use reusable shopping bags
  • Donate clothing or household items that you are not using
  • Clean up litter
  • Shop local, support local small businesses/farmers
  • sign up for a CSA box (Community Supported Agriculture)

This a just a starter list of ideas, but hopefully enough to get some good ideas circulating.

Little Hand with Radishes

The most important thing is to GET YOUR CHILDREN involved! Children love to learn and spent time with their parents. Don’t only teach them about what you are doing but also the “why’s” of what you are doing! Remember they are our future. The decisions we make today affect all of our tomorrows.

I would absolutely love to hear what you all decide to do! I love to learn through others experiences as well.
